Fun Biology Experiments For Kids

biology activities for kids

Biology is fascinating, but only some have access to cutting-edge laboratory equipment to conduct experiments in biology. The main goal is to enjoy science and become more interested in it.

Let’s study life and living organisms with a new set of biology activities for kids! All of these science projects are simple and easy to do at home or in the classroom, and they are all liquid or water-based, so you should have everything you need on hand to complete them.

Bottled Blood Model

This blood bottle model experiment is a great way to teach biology for kids to see how their blood looks and how complex it is. Add a small amount of each ingredient to the jar, swirl it around, and you have a model of your blood.

Materials Needed

  • An empty jar or bottle
  • Corn sugar syrup
  • Candies flavored with red cinnamon
  • White lima beans
  • Marshmallows
  • Dried white streusel

The Lungs Model

By making a lung model, you can teach children about respiration and how their lungs work. Wrap a balloon around the opened end of a plastic bottle and insert another balloon through the bottle’s mouth after removing the bottom. After that, the straw will be inserted through the bottle’s neck and secured with a rubber band and play dough. Blowing into the straw causes the balloons to inflate and deflate as our lungs do.

Materials Required

  • The bottle is made of plastic.
  • Straw
  • The elastic band
  • Two balloons with scissors
  • Prepare some play dough.

Clay and Toothpick Molecules

Molecule science crafts can be made in a variety of styles. This one uses clay and toothpicks, but gumdrops or even small pieces of fruit like grapes can be used in place of the clay. Roll the clay into balls. Now use molecule diagrams to attach the clay to toothpicks. Children can make various molecules and learn how atoms bond to form molecules.

Materials Needed

  • Clay or gummy bears (in four colors)
  • Toothpicks
  • Structures of molecules

An Articulated Hand Model

You can teach children about bones, joints, and how our hands can move in various ways and perform various tasks by creating an articulated hand model. In these interesting biology activities for kids, children will cut straws to represent the various bones in their hands and glue them to the models’ fingers after making a hand out of thin foam. Thread yarn (representing tendons) through the straws, and you’ll have a hand model that moves and bends like real human hands.

Materials Needed

  • Crafting with foam
  • Straws (preferably paper)
  • Tapes
  • Beads
  • Twine or yarn
  • Scissors
  • Chopsticks
  • Pen

The Gummy Bear Osmosis

The gummy bear experiment relies on osmosis. This is the process by which water moves from areas with more water to areas with less water, i.e. from a dilute to a more concentrated solution. Water entered the gummy bear because it is semi-permeable to water (it allows water molecules in but not larger molecules).

Because the difference in water concentration between pure water and the gummy bear was greatest, this process occurred much faster when the gummy bear was in pure water. Because the difference in water concentration between the saltwater and the gummy bear was smaller, the gummy bear in saltwater did not swell as quickly. This distinction is known as a concentration gradient. In saltwater, the gummy bear did not grow as large because water stopped going into the gummy bear once the concentration of water in the gummy bear and the saltwater was equal.

Materials needed

  • Two containers, such as bowls, cups, or jars, and a measuring cup
  • Ruler
  • Salt
  • Water
  • Gummy Bears

If you set aside time during the week to expose kids to such interesting practical classes, they will be drawn to such experiments. Allow them to conduct similar experiments at home with the help of their parents and then report back to class with their findings.
