The Gummy Bear Osmosis
The gummy bear experiment relies on osmosis. This is the process by which water moves from areas with more water to areas with less water, i.e. from a dilute to a more concentrated solution. Water entered the gummy bear because it is semi-permeable to water (it allows water molecules in but not larger molecules).
Because the difference in water concentration between pure water and the gummy bear was greatest, this process occurred much faster when the gummy bear was in pure water. Because the difference in water concentration between the saltwater and the gummy bear was smaller, the gummy bear in saltwater did not swell as quickly. This distinction is known as a concentration gradient. In saltwater, the gummy bear did not grow as large because water stopped going into the gummy bear once the concentration of water in the gummy bear and the saltwater was equal.
